The Road to Recovery Post-Operative Care You Didn’t Know You Needed

So, you've come out of surgery and are ready to conquer recovery like a pro. But before you dive into binge-watching your favourite series, let’s talk about some post-surgical care tips that’ll make your journey smoother—and maybe even a little fun!

1. Move It or Lose It

This is actually one of the best advices to give pre and post surgery. Pre-surgery, it is extremely important to strengthen your muscles as much as possible so that the bounce back post surgery will be easier on your body.

Post surgery - sure, rest is crucial, but did you know light movement can speed up recovery? Whether it's wiggling your toes, passively moving your joint, taking short, gentle walks, keeping the blood flowing can prevent stiffness and reduce swelling. Just listen to your body—if it says “ouch,” you’re probably overdoing it. Balance is the key here!

2. Ice, Ice, Baby!

Ice as much as you can (I’m talking 10-20minutes every hour) for those first couple of weeks. I know, heat is the popular thing right now but in the inflammatory phase, you will want to ice! A good way to know whether you need to ice: use the back of your hand to touch the post surgical area, if it feels warm, slap some ice on. When your therapist or surgeon advises you to switch to contrast therapy, then you can switch.. until then: ice ice baby! Bonus points if you can add compression to help with the swelling!

3. Hydration Is Your Best Friend

Surgery can dehydrate your body, so sip that H2O like it’s a fancy cocktail. Staying hydrated helps flush out anesthesia and medications, keeping you feeling fresher and more energized. Plus, it’s great for your skin!

4. Get Your Zzzs—The Right Way

Sleep is your body’s natural healer. But did you know how you sleep matters? Depending on your surgery, you might need to prop yourself up with pillows or avoid certain positions. Get creative with your pillow fort and find what works best for you. Keeping the recovering area elevated is usually recommended but this will also depend on the body part that went through surgery.

5. Nourish to Flourish

Healing isn’t just about resting; it’s about fueling your body with the right nutrients. Think protein-packed meals, colorful veggies, and plenty of fiber to keep things... moving.

6. Mind Your Mood

Surgery can take a toll on your mental health. Keep your spirits high by indulging in hobbies, listening to uplifting podcasts, or trying some gentle meditation. A positive mindset can do wonders for your recovery!

7. Scar Care Like a Pro

Your therapist will usually work on this with you and should be able to show you how to massage and care for your scar. This must be done! Scar tissue under incisions can be very limiting to our fascial chains and if it’s not worked on, this could be the reason why you still feel that pulling sensation or sharp pain with movements.

8. Listen to Your Body, Not the Clock

Healing isn’t a race. While it’s tempting to beat the timelines given by your surgeon or therapist, remember that everyone recovers differently and healing is NOT linear. Some days you’ll feel like a superhero, and others, not so much. That’s okay! Celebrate small wins and be patient with yourself.

9. Stay Connected

Feeling isolated after surgery? Stay connected with friends and family, even if it’s just a quick chat. Emotional support is key to a speedy recovery and having someone remind you that this part of your journey is just another phase that you will get through, might be what you need in that moment.

10. Seek Professional Care

Book your appointment with your therapist (Chiro, Physio, Athletic Therapist, Massage Therapist) as soon as possible - most surgeries allow you to see your therapist 2 days post surgery as long as transportation is provided. Most clinics should have a protocol if your surgeon doesn’t provide one. To learn more about what MVMT’s post operative care looks like, book your appointment with one of our professionals - yes, you can see us before your surgery date!

Bonus Tip: you should be able to perform and move as well as prior to surgery in most cases with the right care and with being diligent in treatments and exercises. In most cases, people generally move better post surgical recovery with the right therapy because treatments will address functional movement patterns that might not have existed previously!

Recovering from surgery doesn’t have to be a drag. With these unique tips, you’ll be on your way to feeling like your best self in no time. Remember, every small step is a giant leap toward recovery. So hydrate, rest, laugh, and take it one day at a time—you’ve got this!
